High School Essay Contests

This list of essay contests has been prepared by Mr. Steve Smith, Head of the English Department, Boiling Springs High School. Spartanburg District Two students (Boiling Springs or Chesnee High Schools) should contact their English teachers for more details. District Two teachers should contact Mr. Smith for more information.

  1. National Peace Essay Contest--This is a 1,500 word research paper. State winner receives $750.00 and expense free trip to Washington, D. C. National winner receives $5,000. Deadline is January 28, 1998.
  2. Carolina Writes--Students write poetry, prose, and fiction for publication only.
  3. Seventeen Magazine Fiction Contest--Students write a fiction story story of 16 pages or less for publication. Award is $1,000 with a deadline of April 30, 1998.
  4. Discover Card Tribute Award--This is a contest for juniors only that consists of 2 single-spaced pages addressing 4 out of 5 components. State winner receives $2,500, and the national winner will earn $20,000. Deadline is January 13, 1998.
  5. "Ability to Bridge the Future"--This is a three page journalistic essay. The award will earn a student full tuition to a state supported South Carolina college. Deadline is March 1, 1998.
  6. E. F. Ambassador Scholarship--Students must complete an essay due on January 31, 1998. One student will be selected from each state to participate in a European tour.
  7. Pop T.V. Essay Contest--Students will write a 1,500 words for a T. V. show plot concerning population for the world in the year 2000. Award is $500.00.
  8. Fulbright Young Essayists Awards--Students will write an essay of 1,000 to 3,000 words on one of three topics. Awards are $2,000 for juniors; $2,500 for seniors. Entries must be postmarked by January 19,1998.
  9. Optimist Essay Contest--Students prepare a 400 to 500 words essay on "My Opinion of Freedom." Deadline is January 6, 1998. Award is $5,000 and trip to Valley Forge, Pa.
  10. Fountainhead Essay Contest--This is an essay on prompts concerning themes, characters, and plot of the novel. Award is $10,000. Entries are due in March 1998.
  11. Scholastic Literary Competition--Students prepare short stories, essays, fiction, or one-act plays. Awards range from $100 to $5,000. There is a $3.00 entry fee. Entries are due on January 17, 1998.
