Teacher with 22 Years of Service to Mayo Elementary School
Named The SCEA Teacher of the Month

COLUMBIA, SC (May 11, 2015) - Mrs. Traci Hewitt, a second-grade teacher at Mayo Elementary School in Spartanburg County School District Two, has been named The South Carolina Education Association's Teacher of the Month for May.

"I learn new things every day," wrote one of Mrs. Hewitt's students. "She makes class fun, because she lets us research animals and has brought animal things for us to look at."

"I couldn't have asked for a better teacher," wrote a parent on her online nomination. "She really cares for her students, and it shows."

"Mrs. Hewitt has made a special effort to help (my son) transition from a private to public school setting, in every way, including curriculum," wrote another parent. "She communicates constantly, giving us specific goals and ways to help (my son) improve. She has been proactive about getting him extra help in math and reading, and in three months, he has made more improvement academically than in any other (much longer) time period. Within the first two weeks of school, she expressed concern and had already pulled his entire academic history before contacting us. She has spearheaded an all-encompassing approach and team of people to help (my son) succeed. We have gone from discouraged to hopeful because of her. And more than anything, she loves our son."

As Teacher of the Month, Mrs. Hewitt is being featured in 15-second commercials airing over FOX television affiliates across the state.

"The SCEA is proud to recognize teachers who go above and beyond," said Bernadette R. Hampton, President of The SCEA. "Mrs. Hewitt cares deeply for her students and is clearly dedicated to her school, where she has taught continually for 22 years. That is loyalty. That is commitment. That is excellence."
