The state of South Carolina has set guidelines for the
screenings of school children. High School students are required
to have their blood pressure tested while in the 11th grade. The Blood Pressure Screening event takes place each February. Your student should bring home a copy of his/her blood pressure reading. In the event that the pressure is abnormal, we will rescreen the student 3 additional times. After the third check another paper will be sent home to notify you of the results. Blood pressure readings can be affected by stress, illness, family history, and a variety of other health problems. To help maintain a normal blood pressure everyone should eat well-balanced meals, exercise, get plenty of rest, and see doctor yearly for check-ups. If blood pressure problems are identified early, and treated properly, then most people can lead normal lives. High blood pressure left untreated can cause lots of problems such as stroke, kidney damage that can lead to dialysis, heart attack, and many other health problems.
