As the different letters of the alphabet and their sounds are introduced we also learn the sign for each letter. When new words are introduced we say the word and then sign it. We also count to 10 in sign language. We have a Sign Language chart that the children often go to so they can check how to spell their names or other words in sign language.
Why Use Sign Language? Sign Language like foreign languages seem to be very natural for the kindergarten age child. The signing also helps to teach diversity to the children. The slower learner with the use of sign has a concrete way that he/she can recall the sound and letter, the ADD and/or ADHD child has a way that keeps them actively involved in the learning and the advanced child is challenged to learn to communicate in a new way as well as develop an understanding for those that need to use sign on a daily basis for communication.
Can We Help With Sign Language?
Below is a web site the students may use to review
American Sign Language Alphabet http://www.nellieedge.com/movie_love.htm Check this out for a song using sign and the word love. Great to start the year with if you do The Kissing Hand.
I love you!
