Sight Word Activities

Please try these ideas to make learning sight words fun:

Be sure to say the word as he/she works with it.  Try practicing small chunks of words at a time so that he does not become overwhelmed with the amount of words he doesn’t know.

  • make the words out of play-dough
  • trace the words in sand or salt
  • paint the words
  • play a matching game
  • play bingo with them
  • spell the words with magnetic letters on the refrigerator
  • trace the words in shaving cream (squirted on the side of the tub during bath time - bonus you get a clean tub)
  • write them on the tub with bath crayons
  • write them on the sidewalk or driveway with chalk
  • flash cards
  • play a fishing game etc.
  • write on dry erase boards
  • write with markers
  • have a word hunt in a room of the house - hide the sight words and call them out for the child to find
  • do a word hunt in magazines/newspapers, circle, highlight, or cut out words (this works well in church with a bulletin) If you cut them out make a collage to hang in their room.
