Parent Tips

A Tip: for that first day of school and life.

We Left You At The Door
by James Singleton

We took you down to school today. You're just beginning now. Although this year you're five years old, you seem so young somehow! We didn't take you all the way, for we'd been told before, "Don't go into his room with him. Just leave him at the door."

Up to this time we've always gone together everywhere,
And we have had a lot of fun while traveling here and there;
But we well knew before it came, we’re parted more and more. So many times we will stand outside and leave you at the door.

You're growing up so very fast. It's hard to keep in step.
The fact of changing years is hard for parents to accept.
You'll have to walk your path alone. No matter what's in store. We'll bring you up to life's classroom. Then leave you at the door.

While you were ours these tender years. We treasured every day, full knowing that the time would come, when you would go your way. And though this love will still remain, within our heart's deep care. Our eyes will sting to see you go and leave us at the door!

How can you help your child learn to love school?

Please make sure that you check your child's clipboard each day so that you will see any important information that we send home.

Come to school events to show that school is important to you.

Help your child learn his/her full name, birthday, address, and phone number.

Dismissal can be confusing at times!  Please wait for your child.  It is also easier if you stay in your car and drive to pick up your child.  If you park, please do so in the parking lot.  This will allow traffic to keep moving.  If you need to see me, I will be glad to talk with you after we dismiss the children.

If your child is going home a different, PLEASE, SEND A NOTE!  We cannot take your child's word that he/she is leaving a different way.  It is also a good idea to talk with your child about it so that he/she will be aware of what you would like for him/her to do.

Please send all money in an envelope with the following information written on it:  Child's name, teacher's name, amount enclosed, and the purpose of the money.  When sending money, make sure that your child knows that they have it and what it is for.

When it is necessary to send medicine to school, please contact the nurse or refer to the Handbook for instructions.

When bringing your child each day, we prefer that you say "Good Bye" in the car and let them walk in the building alone.  This makes the separation so much easier.  Someone is always inside the building to look after your child.  However, if you need to talk to us for any reason, please feel free to come in!  For the first week you may want to walk your child in and help him/her find his/her way.  Once they get the hang of things they will be fine, and get a satisfaction out of being independent.

The work can wait while you show the child the rainbow,
but the rainbow won't wait while you do the work.

How can you help your child learn to love reading?

Reading with your child is the most important thing you can do (no matter what age!). Read to your child for 15 minutes each day.  Be sure you write one book down on the Reading Log to be returned to school.

Visit the library to find books that meet your child’s specific interests.

Encourage your child to read a variety of materials. These can include house numbers, signs, and package labels.

Most importantly, show your child that you like to read.
